A dog-friendly pub in the village of Holcombe has been tipped as a must-visit for owners in the area and it has the perfect walk to get there too.
The Shoulder of Mutton sees many dog walkers stop in for a drink after a hike up to the nearby Peel Tower, including Amanda Killelea and her Cavapoo Sir Digby.
And it’s not just the pub-goers who can take the weight off to enjoy something to eat after stretching their legs, the four-legged visitors can too.
Cavapoo Sir Digby is obviously a fan of this village watering hole and it’s not hard to see why.
Recommending it to other dog owners, Angela told TeamDogs: “There is a great walk up to Peel Tower and Holcombe Moor with the incentive of a nice drink or dinner in the Shoulder afterwards.
“Sir Digby actually drags me to the door of the pub every time as he knows they keep a jar of dog treats on the bar.”
Obviously a very clever dog.
But it’s not just the treats that make this a great pub for dog lovers, the location is pretty special too.
The walk to Peel Tower
Although it can sometimes be a strenuous one according to VisitBury, the walk across Holcombe Moor is a scenic one which takes you through woodland and up to Peel Tower.
The route is well signposted and if in doubt, just follow the other walkers as it’s never short of those.
Once you reach the top, you can stop to catch your breath and enjoy the incredible views across Manchester and the North West.
Although this circular route is dog friendly, some parts take you across farmland so it’s important to keep them under control in order to protect the livestock in the area and keep to footpaths.
What’s on the menu?
Once you make your way back down the hill, you and your dog can make yourself comfy in The Shoulder of Mutton to enjoy a well-deserved drink and something to eat.
Its menu offers a mix of sandwiches, pies, burgers and steaks, as well as traditional pub grub.
It’s menu includes:
- King prawn & mussel stew served with dipping bread
- Minted Lamb Henry oven cooked with port & mint sauce, herby potatoes and buttered vegetables
- Traditional fish & chips with crispy real ale batter, hand cut chips, mushy peas and homemade tartare sauce
- Chicken & white wine with wild Mushrooms, Dijon, cream, lemon, herby potatoes and vegetables
