Comedian John Bishop has shared the one reason why he thinks that every married man should have a dog.

It comes as he sent out a supportive message to Hope Rescue, in Wales, for all the work they do to save unwanted and abandoned dogs.

The Liverpudlian entertainer said: “I just want to say a message to you and everyone at the Hope dog rescue centre to thank you for all the work that you’re doing. Looking at the way my hair looks this morning you could do with rescuing me to be honest with you.

“But thanks for all the work that you’re doing and anyone else that picks up this message please give them as much support as you can.”

The 54-year-old, who is a vegetarian, has always been a keen supporter of animal charities.

In a video posted to Twitter he went on to reveal why he thinks every married man should have a dog.

He said: “It’s vital work and there’s nothing like having a dog in your house. Every married man should have a dog, because you need someone at home who’s pleased to see you.”

The video comes just weeks after John lost one of his beloved English bull terriers, Bilko, in June. He shared a series of photos of his dog on his Instagram account, with one captioned: "God I loved him ...thank you all from all the family for your kind messages. We will all miss him x"

John’s other dog Tigger has been missing his buddy, who the TV funny man said was his ‘best mate’.

He has often used his social media channels to encourage others to rescue, and in 2018 tweeted: "Further to the dog pics this morning - both are rescue dogs and have been brilliant in our family so if your (sic) thinking of getting a dog consider a rescue one."
