Dogs can sleep in the funniest of positions, but the way they sleep can often shine a light on how they are feeling.

If you have ever wondered if your dog is happy, here are a few tricks to help you understand your dog's health, personality and emotions.

Believe it or not, your pooch's favourite sleeping position actually reveals a lot about them, so pay attention next time you catch them mid-snooze, reports RSVP Live.

Here's why our dogs sleep in certain ways.

The Donut

One of the cutest sleeping positions, this is when your dog tucks their paws beneath their body and curls up so their head is resting on their tail, basically turning your pup into a fuzzy bagel.

Your dog might be trying to preserve body heat and protect the fundamental parts of their body.

Because it’s the most common sleeping position for animals in the wild since it provides warmth and protects the vital organs, they could be uncomfortable in their surroundings, but they're most likely just super snug curled up like this.

Crazy legs

This is when your pooch lies on their back and stretches out their legs.

It means they’re confident and relaxed in their surroundings.

Your furry friend might be feeling the heat and adopt this position to try to cool off, since their bellies have thinner fur and the paws hold sweat glands - it’s the best way to beat the heat.

Dogs who sleep in this position are generally independent with a calm nature.

The position makes it difficult for dogs to get up quickly, and having their belly exposed means they're okay with being vulnerable, seeing your home as their own - so cute!

Cuddling or Back to Back

If your dog likes to cuddle up with you, it means they trust you and want to bond.

Cuddling or sleeping back to back with other dogs in your house could also be a habit from earlier days.

Puppies have a tougher time regulating their body temperature than mature dogs, so as they grow this position becomes more of a habit.

Side sleeping

This is an indication that your pet has no worries - he or she is cool as a breeze.

They're relaxed and comfortable in their surroundings since they're okay with their vital organs being exposed.

Dogs who sleep like this are usually pretty easy-going and have an affectionate and close bond with their owners.

You probably won't catch your dog in this position in new surroundings or people.

Lion's pose

This position prevents our dogs from falling into a deep sleep because the muscles are tense and contracted.

It's common for pups with a considerable amount of energy who isn't ready to sleep yet.

They're comfortable but in an easy position to get up when you're ready to play.

Superman

This funny pose is when your dog sleeps on their stomach with their limbs outstretched looking like they're ready to channel their inner Clark Kent and take flight.

It’s an indication your dog is in the mood to play - as it’s easy for them to get up on their feet quickly.

Laying on your clothes

If your furry friend has a habit of sleeping on or next to your clothes it means your pet loves you and wants to be close to you.

Our clothes are covered in our scent and it's comforting for our pets, especially when we're not around.

So next time you come home from work and find your pup asleep on that new sweater you just splashed out on, take it as a compliment.
