How to help your pet pooch avoid the summertime blues

6 top tips from Animed Direct to keep your dog happy

With summer just around the corner and more opportunities to spend time outside, it is the perfect time to consider how to keep your pet pooch safe and happy.

Warmer weather can be unpleasant if you have fur, but with some sensible precautions you and your pet should be able to enjoy the summer sun.

From keeping them cool and comfy while travelling to protecting them against pesky bugs, Animed Direct, a company providing care supplies, food, and more, has you covered for every eventuality.

Here is a run down of top tips from Animed Direct -

Keep them cool

Dogs have no time to acclimatise when the heat ramps up overnight and so you need to consider how to help them stay cool.

Taking them for walks either earlier or later in the day, away from peak temperatures, or finding shaded areas to walk will help and don’t forget to check the pavement to ensure it won’t burn your furry friend's paw pads.

Ensure your pet has a cool place to retreat to and, if they have been lying in the heat for a while, encourage them to move to a shadier spot and don't forget to have water on hand.

Animed have a range of items to help cool your pet down, such as the Animate Cooling dog coat and bag and the gel-filled Coco Jojo cooling mat or the All For Paws chill out ice ball or chill out orange flier which give cool play, while its splash and fun dog pool is the ultimate in water fun.

Other products include a water fountain to help keep your dog hydrated and entertained as well as cool and a dog bandana which you can wet and then pop around their neck.

Never leave them in cars

You should never leave dogs in cars during hot weather - even for a few minutes, as the air in the car quickly heats up and this can cause fatal overheating.

In fact, the same rule applies to a hot sunroom or a sun trap - dogs need air and shade to be able to regulate their temperature.

Slather on the sunscreen

Just as you would do for yourself, ensure your dog has some sunscreen on - particularly if they are white or pale coated.

Suncream will prevent burning. Ensure you pay attention to spots that have less hair cover such as ears.

You could also add the Coco JoJo Cooling Vest which will not only keep them comfortable but helps protect them against UV and heat-related illness.

Keep fleas at bay

Whether you have a flea problem or not, regular flea treatment can either kill existing adult fleas or be used as a preventative measure to keep them away from your home and pet.

Animed's top Spot on flea products include Advantage, Fipnil Plus, Frontline Plus, Vectra 3D, Vectra Felis and Effipro Duo.

You can choose a household spray, such as INdorex Defence, StayKil or RIP Fleas Extra, to instantly kill any live fleas and prevent larva hatching for up to a year.

Beware of ticks

Exploring the outdoors, particularly grassy areas, can also mean bringing home ticks.

They can be tricky to remove, as there is a risk of leaving part behind without the right technique and this could cause health problems such as Lyme Disease.

Ticks prefer areas where there is less hair and better access to their host’s blood supply.

Ideally take your dog to the vet, who will use a tick remover tool. If you are doing it at home use a similar tool then wash the area and use a pet friendly antiseptic wipe to reduce the chance of infection. If your pet becomes unwell seek medical assistance.

Travel safely

There are ways of helping ease the stress of travel, from exercising them before you leave and giving your dog a secure travel space, such as a carrier or crate or use a harness or pet seat belt to stop them moving around.

Take breaks regularly, ensure they are hydrated and keep fresh air flowing throughout the car throughout the trip. However, do not allow your dog to put their head out of the window because of risk of injury.

A range of toys is advisable, to keep them entertained. Chew toys and other toys that require concentration can help to keep your pet calm.
