Dogs are at the heart of most families with many people treating their pooches as though they are their baby.

So it’s always gut-wrenching when your pet shows signs of being unwell. But, unlike a child, our dogs can’t easily let us know that they feel poorly.

So how can you tell when your dog is feeling under the weather?

Although there are no definitive signs of fever in dogs, some signs which could indicate they need care include:

  • Lethargy
  • Depressed mood
  • Shivering
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Coughing
  • Pain/discomfort

Dave Leicester, head of telehealth at Vets Now, who looks after a team of experienced video vets said: “If your dog’s behaviour has changed, for example, they have stopped eating or drinking, become lethargic, started doing the toilet more or less than usual or started showing signs of pain, distress or discomfort this is a more clear indicator that they are unwell and need veterinary care.

“However, you know your dog best and if you are concerned about their wellbeing for any reason it’s always best to contact a vet for advice.”
