After a rainy few months in lockdown, we’re probably all grateful to see the sun shining again and ready to spend time outdoors soaking in the rays.
And while you may be well-stocked with sunscreen and patio umbrellas, spare a thought for your dogs, who may be desperate for some shade of their own if your back yard is devoid of trees.
The PDSA charity warns that pets shouldn’t be allowed to sunbathe for long periods in direct sunlight. And while they say you can apply SPF 30 or higher waterproof sunscreen that is child or pet safe to your dog - especially on sensitive noses, ears, bellies and any other hairless skin patches or light-coloured fur - the charity also warns that dogs are prone to lick sun lotions off!
So TeamDogs have scoured the web for some sun shelters that will look great in your garden. Some would be perfect on a campsite while others offer a whimsical shelter that you won’t be able to resist sharing on social media.
Best of all, they’re all portable enough to take them to the park or the beach, so your pet can avoid the burn and chill out as much as you plan to.

B&M Stores offers this raised bed for £20 and says it can help protect your dog from the cold ground, as well as shielding it from the sun. It comes in green and grey so you can match it to your own patio furniture - and the lightweight struts on the canopy make it easy to clip into place.

A stylish small dog is going to be excited to lounge around in this trendy teepee all day long and it’s going to look fab on Instagram. This offering from Asda’s All Pets range is only £16.
It comes with a removable cushion and it’s machine washable so you don’t need to worry if it gets a few grass stains on it. One reviewer said they’d bought one for their dogs but wasn’t certain it would be a hit - she had to go back the next day and buy a second as they both wanted to use it!
The Floppy Dawg bed comes in two sizes with the small on Amazon at £59.90 and the large at £72.31. It has a breathable mesh raised platform to allow your dog to feel cool and comfortable. The shade is detachable too, and reviewers commented on the sturdy construction and durable materials.
Wayfair has also gone down the teepee route with this Parisian-patterned pet tent. It’s £31.99 and bigger than some reviewers expected. The five wooden sticks slot into the fabric and are secured with rope around the top, making it easy to take down and carry with you. The cotton-padded mattress is also pleasingly thick, and the washable cotton canvas fabric is mildew-resistant and easy to clean.

This stylish and space-age-looking tent is heat resistant, so could help your dog during the next spell of record temperatures.
It’s £25.99 from Mountain Warehouse and like a human pup-tent, it’s got a pop-up function for instant shade. A reviewer on the site said it was brilliant for the beach as it’s lightweight and easy to fold up.
At £100.83 this Knuffelwuff cave bed is the most expensive we’ve found, but with faux sheepskin and a super-thick cushion it’s going to offer your big dog a luxurious place to lounge, indoors or outside. The clamshell roof offers the choice of shade or a little sun, and the whole thing is machine washable. The makers say light dirt can simply be brushed or shaken out.
